If you have evacuated, wait for public officials to announce that it is safe to return to your home.
Avoid Driving
Following a storm, traffic signals may not be working, or there may be downed power lines. Only drive if necessary.
Avoid Floodwaters
Avoid driving or wading through floodwaters, as they may be electrically charged, contain dangerous materials, or be hiding places where the ground has been washed away.
Check for Danger
Check outside your home and property for loose power lines, gas leaks, or structural damage. DO NOT enter a building until it has been inspected.
Protect Yourself
Wear protective gear such as gloves, safety goggles, and masks to shield yourself from debris and other hazards.
Prevent More Damage
Do what you can to prevent more damage to your home, such as placing a tarp over a hole in the roof or covering a broken window.
Avoid Electrical Equipment
DO NOT use any electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.
