While hurricanes may be the most talked about, there are many types of disasters that can affect Clay County. Citizens should take steps to be prepared for all hazards and emergencies.
Tornado
Go to an interior room without windows on the lowest floor of the building. Never stay in an automobile. If outside with no shelter, lie flat on the ground in a low-lying area with your head covered.
Hurricane
Prepare your home. Make emergency kit & plan. Evacuate if area is prone to flooding. Notify family if not evacuating.
Flooding
Learn your flood risk. Move to high ground. Plan two evacuation routes. Do not drive on flooded roads. Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown!
High Winds

Extreme Temperatures
Monitor Heat/Frost advisories & warnings. Dress accordingly. Ensure pets have water and shelter. Never leave kids, pets, & the elderly alone.

Get vaccinated. Wash hands frequently with soap & water. Avoid contact with sick people. Wear a face-mask correctly. Follow CDC recommendations.
Hazardous Materials Incident
Evacuate when asked. Stay upstream, uphill, upwind. If possible, cover your mouth with a cloth. Try not to inhale gases, fumes and smoke.
Active Shooter
Run. Escape. Evacuate if possible. If unable to run, hide and block the assailant's entry point if possible. Remain quiet. Fight back only as a last resort.
